I don’t know about you but it always surprises me that at the change of seasons each year I forget how to dress. That first cold snap sends me into a bit of a spin as I try to remember what it was I did to keep warm this time last year.
It’s the same when I ride.
But don’t stress…I got this for you!
HEAD:
Wear some kind of headwear under your helmet. E.g. Cap, skullcap, ear-warmers, bandana etc. (Anything in merino wool would be ideal as it breathes easily as you heat up!)
NECK:
A neck gaiter is a definite MUST. Again, try to find merino products rather than synthetic. Much softer on the skin which is important around that highly sensitive area.
HANDS:
Shelve the finger-less gloves for now – it’s complete finger coverage from here on in…well at least for the next few months!
LEGS:
Unroll those leg warmers… you’re going to need them! The woollier the better. Or alternatively, invest in long knicks for the cooler months. Nice!
FEET:
You are definitely going to need your oversocks - even though they can be a big fat pain to put on! My little indulgence this year is going to be just the Toe Covers (I’ll let you know if they’re any good…)
ARMS:
Base layers are the go here and arm warmers over the top (if they’ll fit). Merino wool products are again your far superior product but if all you have is polyester, bang that on. Think warmth ANDflexibility – with particular focus on your torso to keep all those vital organs toasty. Which brings me to my number 7..
TORSO:
A vest is an incredibly understated little garment when cycling. Their value is in the way they reduce heat loss. So even the thinnest little gilet has a purpose on a cold morning. (I have also been known to don a duck-down vest too. Sumptuous!!)
What is your favourite go to for layering up in Winter?

Are gloves a necessary part of your cycling apparel?? For so many reasons I say "yes"!
Sweat, warmth, skin protection, shock absorption and nose drips!
Gloves are definitely necessary...
