Cycling gloves – are they necessary??
It’s a great question. Are cycling gloves actually necessary and if so, how so?
Personally, I never ride without them. And here’s why...
Sweat - On rides in warmer weather they are great for absorbing sweat which in turn improves your grip and control on the handle bars.
Shock absorption - Good quality cycling gloves will also provide extra padding in strategic areas to assist with shock absorption.
They are designed to reduce the feeling of pins and needles in the fingers which can occur as a result of compression of the nerves innervating the hand.
Skin Protection in Crashes - Gloves can provide extra protection in a crash.
Quite often in a crash it's a reflex reaction to stick your hands out in front of you to break your fall.
Gloves are a useful first layer of defence in preventing painful cuts and grazes.
Warmth - Gloves in the cold weather are imperative. It can be seriously painful in the finger department when cycling on frosty mornings, so gloves in this instance are a must.
Nose wiper - And last but by no means least…they are a very handy tool for that pesky dripping nose.
Most gloves have an absorbent strip running up the thumb for exactly that purpose.
Gross as it sounds…it’s very handy!
So, are they necessary??
I reckon they definitely are...
